What's the Story?

The Trump administrationโ€™s โ€œBig Brutal Budgetโ€ supercharges Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), giving it an unprecedented $37.5 billionโ€”making it the most heavily funded federal law enforcement agency in U.S. history. The new budget enables an immediate hiring spree of 10,000 agents, the construction of mega-detention camps, and 100,000 new detention beds. This expansion prioritizes fear and militarization over civil rights and public safety.

While ICE builds out this vast enforcement machine, its tactics are drawing condemnation. Recent raids in Los Angeles and across the country used military-style force and masked agents to violently detain immigrantsโ€”many without criminal records, legal warrants, or due process. These actions have been described by legal experts and human rights organizations as violations of U.S. and international law.

Meanwhile, federal disaster response has been underfunded. In the wake of catastrophic floods in Texas that left over 120 dead, MAGA politicians deflected blame even as years of cuts to NOAA and FEMA warning systems are now contributing to loss of life. Instead of funding community protection and resilience, this budget prioritizes surveillance and incarceration.

Why Does This Matter?

ICEโ€™s unchecked power and bloated funding are not just policy misstepsโ€”they are threats to democracy. Raiding homes and communities without legal justification undermines the rule of law. Disappearing people without access to lawyers or hearings violates the fundamental American principle of due process. No one should be afraid to take their child to school or attend a court hearing for fear of state abduction.

The American people are not asking for militarized immigration squads. They are asking for safe communities, healthcare, housingโ€”and for FEMA to be funded, not ICE. If this budget stands, we are not only endangering immigrantsโ€”we are normalizing authoritarian tactics that can easily expand to target others.
